What would you have done?

John and I bought this cute little painting of some cusqueños while in Cuzco. I took it last week to my framer. With these framers here, you can custom pick your frame style, the color for it, whether to have the inside indention of the frame painted a different color to accent and the color of the matte. Typically the Peruvians have not liked my choice of solid black with no accents and then the blanco matte to define the art itself.

But that soon may change.

When I picked up the painting last Thursday, the vendor said, "Tell me. Why did you choose all black for the frame?"

I was a little surprised by the inquisition and was not feeling well, the plague still upon me, so I stuttered something about the versatility of black and that I can put the painting in any room." (I know - not the most cosmopolitan answer.)

He said, "That's interesting. Yesterday a woman from England came in and saw this painting. She wanted it and offered me $500 for it exactly as it was. She said she loved the colors with the black frame. I told her I couldn't sell it, that it wasn't mine and she argued for a bit before she finally gave up and left."

I told him. "Thanks for not selling my painting."

So when I got home and relayed all of this to John, guess what he said.

"Did you get that lady's name and number???"

He said with the $500 he would take me back to Cuzco and get another painting.

What a funny guy.

But I will be interested to see if more paintings don't come framed in black now in that shop.

I like it! I would have kept it...now $5000? That would be different.

Love the painting! How many of those could you buy with the $500?

I think I would have sold it for $500, knowing the cost of artwork and framing in Peru. But, it's a beautiful painting and great frame selection! I also got many things framed in black there, and I think they wondered why I liked it so plain. :)
