Playing with portraiture - looking for feedback

I am doing some portraits for friends on Saturday, so I made my kids pose in order to get some practice in.  I must admit that I am happier with the pictures of Justin and his guitar, than Miranda and the piano.  But some of that is her ballet attire - I literally grabbed her and said, "Sit at the piano so I can practice", the ponytail - not my favorite hairstyle, but good for ballet class, and the clutteredness of the background. But I am posting these looking for feedback -  so what works and what doesn't to you in these pictures.  Thanks!

She is such apretty girl, even in the ponytail. :)

Ooo - too sharp I think.
But this last one I just love.

I really like #3 and #4 of Miranda especially. #1 is classic too but I think for a portrait you need just a tiny bit more face, kwim? But still, it's beautiful and the lighting is lovely. Love the coloring of #4.

I do think the first Justin one is too sharp but the second one is perfect. Love the composition and the coloring. Very rock starrish. :^)

I suggest trying a few from above so that your subject has to sort of peek up at you also. It's a little more unconventional for a portrait but I really like how mine have turned out at this angle.

Who are you photographing?

Sounds like you had a good book club tonight. Wish I could have been there.

We went and traded in the Suburban for a mini-van today. The beast was just too much car! We also wanted to trade it in while it still had some value left in it! It was starting to have issues so we thought now was a good time. We got a Nissan Quest and those people are so desperate to get stuff of their lots that they offered us twice what another dealer offered us for the Suburban and knocked the price all the way down to wholesale price (basically $7,000 less than blue book). Seems spontaneous but we have been considering this for quite some time.

Speaking of books... I'm here writing a book in your comments. Sorry!

What gorgeous grandkids I have! I love the natural lighting in Miranda's shots...especially the first two. The bkg in Justin's is a little bright, even though the lighting on his face is good--almost Rembrandt. I love Kevin in partial shadow and the softness of the shot.

Lighting is difficult in portraits--we've been playing with natural light with Jaycie...difficult for sure!

Okay, so I know I don't know enough to weigh in but I'm going to anyway :) I love #1 of Miranda, the lighting is spectacular, but I agree with Nan, not enough face if you're doing someone else's portrait. #3 I think the lighting distorts her face a little on the left (of the picture, her right side face).I LOVE how the lighting sets off her face and set up of #4. Lovely!

Ditto Nan about Justin.

I feel like I'm just echoing everyone else's comments. They're all really good. Miranda #1 would be better if she wasn't turned so far away from you. Miranda #4 is definitely the best of the bunch of her. Background in Justin #1 is too bright, but still a good pic...could probably fix in CameraRaw or Photoshop. Love Justin #2. I'm anxious to have a new subject soon so I can practice too. Lucy is too camera shy and thinks I'm going to put medicine in her ear every time I get down on her level. But my baby won't be able to get away! :)
