Happy Tax Day!

In about 20 minutes we will be sitting down to watch Glen Beck in San Antonio at the mighty Alamo, at one of the many, many Tax Day rallies. He is hilarious so we will surely be entertained as well as enlightened.

I had an interesting discussion today with the kids during morning prayer. I asked one of the boys to pray for the rallies today, that people would be responsible and wise so that the message they were wanting to get across would not be hindered. Which led another child to ask, "So people are mad that they have to pay taxes?" Which led to the discussion.

I explained to the kids that it wasn't the taxes per say that were being protested. We citizens have been paying taxes for a long time to fund the work of the government. It is also NOT about "taxation without representation" for crying out loud.

It is about a federal government not using its resources wisely, as has been the case for a long, long, long time, but this time the people have had enough. AND it is about a government over-reaching it's boundaries and taking control where it has not been permitted to do so. Yes, it didn't start with this administration, but as I have said before, at this time it is being forced on us in a way unlike ever before. And it is about elected officials not working for the people, but their own political gain, not even reading a bill that spends more money than is even comprehensible, of which future generations will be paying on, and on, and on, and on....

So that is what the rallies are about. Sending a message to a government with the power to do right by it's citizens, but has of yet, not shown any interest in doing anything but establishing its own political agendas. When our elected officials are willing to actually work for us again, and actually read the things they are signing which affects the rest of us, they will receive the respect due their offices. And if they aren't willing to actually do the work we pay them to do, they should be thrown out - the whole lot of 'em - and give us a fresh start and a chance for real change.

But I take back my hope. We can never put our hope in men - but mere mortals, corruptible - our hope can only be in Christ. Only through Christ can men find real hope and real change. My hope is in Him and my expectations for wisdom, responsibility, and ethical work habits are in my elected officials.

I know, it's asking a lot. But It's not too much to ask.
