A Bedtime Story

I have been wanting to get a good idea on where Justin, my oldest son, is in regards to his writing abilities. He is an amazing creative writer, with several books going at a time and fan base (of his friends) waiting eagerly for the next installment to come out. But we haven't done much expository writing, so this afternoon, I gave him an assignment for the next week.

Looking to one of his areas of interest, I asked him to write a short paper on the history of Darth Vader, specifically why Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader turned to the Dark Side. He made a face and said ok. A few minutes later, he said, "You know what's funny?"

"What?"

"Well, I just finished the book I was reading yesterday(in the Star Wars series) and the kid in the book was told by one of his parents to write a paper on why Darth Vader turned to the Dark Side."

"That is funny. And kinda weird."

"Yeah."

And that was the end of the conversation for a time.

We proceeded through the day with one of the kids asking if we could have a family movie night. So after dinner, John went to get the movie we had requested - Bedtime Stories - one the kids had seen but John and I hadn't yet. We laughed in all the right places and enjoyed ourselves and the silliness involved watching a story about a guy who tells bedtime stories with his niece and nephew in which aspects of the stories end up coming true.

So just now, as I was washing up the rest of the dishes, I had an eerie realization.

As Justin came into the kitchen, I stopped him. "Justin, I asked you today to write a paper about something that was asked to be written by a kid in the book you were just reading and then we watched a movie about a guy whose stories come true. Weird."

And Justin, his face slowly creasing into an incredulous smile agreed, "That is weird."

So I just had to blog it.

The end.

Moral: God does have a sense of humor and sometimes he surprises us with his wittiness.
